At Slack Shoemakers our long-term interest in modernism influences our thoughts on the colours we use to hand stain our leathers and to detail the combinations the shoes are made in.

When we started experimenting with blocks of colour on the leathers we realised that Rothko was having a strong influence in the way we put the palate together – white centre – rust and blue – black on grey. Much time was spent mixing the stain colours to increase or decrease the densities to moderate or expand the bright’s we are known for. The water stains that we use on the natural un-dyed leathers give these colours a rich lustrous finish.

Maybe it is the different landscape of the Yorkshire Moors environment we are now working in or the changing world but our colours are now more mellow and richer than ever before.
